Brownie-like chocolate cake floats on top of rich hot chocolate sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 3 Tbs cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 Tbs olive oil (or vegetable oil)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup roasted nuts (optional)
  • Cooking spray, as needed
  • Topping1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 3/4 cup hot water

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Sift together flour, baking powder, cocoa, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
  • Add sugar and mix. Add oil, milk, and vanilla. Mix until well incorporated, but do not over-mix. Add roasted nuts if using.
  • Spray 8 x 8-inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray. Pour mixture into baking pan.
  • Add topping ingredients, just sugar and cocoa to a mixing bowl, and mix well. Sprinkle on top of batter.
  • Take hot water from tap, and slowly pour it on top of everything. Make sure that all of the topping is wet.
  • Bake for 45 minutes.
