Men’s health is a broad issue spanning both physical and mental aspects, and it is often overlooked when it comes to the wider nutrition market. While focus typically centres on protein and exercise supplements, there is a rising awareness among men regarding mental health, quality of life and healthy aging.
PureSea® is a clean label, sustainable, gold standard seaweed offering natural iodine which is crucial for men’s fertility, energy and sports recovery, mental health and much more. Let’s take a look at those benefits.
Men and Fertility
Without sufficient iodine, the thyroid gland could become underactive, with symptoms for men including loss of libido, sexual performance, and weight gain1.
Studies show that hypothyroidism can lower free testosterone levels in the blood as well as levels of sex hormone-binding globulin, a protein which carries testosterone round the body2. This in consequence can also impact fertility.
Energy & Sports Recovery for Men
Thyroid impacts metabolism, which is the effectiveness of how food is turned into energy. Ensuring metabolism is working effectively is a key part of optimising energy for all aspects of life, and in particular sport and training. As iodine is excreted in urine and sweat, the more men exercise and drink, the more iodine they lose. A study3 showed that as iodine intake in the diet is not increased for most people when exercising, a group of footballers had lower iodine levels than sedentary people due to the loss of iodine the footballers had in their urine and sweat.
Men and Mental health
Men’s mental health is a topic that is receiving increased attention, and for good reason. Iodine and cognitive health are interlinked via the thyroid, and without sufficient iodine, cognition may be impaired, which in turn could impact mental health and performance. More broadly, an underactive thyroid has symptoms of depression and anxiety.4
PureSea® seaweed ingredient is sustainably wild harvested from the pristine waters of the Scottish Outer Hebrides. PureSea® delivers a plant based source of essential iodine that allows multiple EFSA Approved Health Claims.
